What Does B2B Mean?

What does B2B mean? We get this from time to time, so in this article, we’re going to break down what B2B really means.

B2B stands for business to business, and what does that mean? It means businesses that sell to other businesses. There are two other types of businesses that you can be: you can be a B2C company, which is business to consumer, or you can be a B2G company, which is business to government. So you have your three different types of businesses: B2C, B2B and B2G. Let’s have a look at an example.

Imagine a café. A cafe is primarily business to consumer. So they’re primarily serving the general public. But they can also have a B2B component. If they’re catering work lunches or if they have a venue that they can hire out during Christmas for example or any time of the year to corporates. If there are ministry offices around they could also be B2G because they’re selling to the government. So at the same time, a cafe can be all three: B2C, B2B, and B2G.

It’s clear now how a simple café can have a complicated target market assessment. At the end of the day, it is primarily a B2C company and would identify itself as such. But what this example shows is that you can be all three in varying degrees at the same time. That’s not always the case but the possibility does exist.

So when we talk about B2B we mean businesses whose target market is other businesses. When we talk about whoiswhere being a B2B business database, what we mean is that we sell information about businesses to businesses who want to reach them.

Our primary target market for whoiswhere data is a B2B company. A secondary market is B2G companies since we also hold information about government departments and ministries.

A purely B2C company would have no need to have a list of other businesses. But a B2B company may want to invest in a list of businesses that need their services. And that’s why we make a distinction to say B2B Business Data.
